This is an upright stroller that has a retractable handle and two (2) retractable wheels. It has wicker around the sides and back of the stroller, the seating area looks to be old corduroy. It is all original and has never been restored.
I asked an antique dealer about the stroller and he said these were made by the Withrow Mfg. Co., F.A. Whitney, and possibly others. They were referred to as”Oriole Go Baskets” because the shape resembles the hanging nest of the oriole bird. Another name used was “Auto Cart.” They were made at the turn of the century and were sold in some of the “high end” stores of the day like Marshall Field. I asked about the corduroy upholstery, and he said that would be correct. He also said old pieces like this are getting hard to find in good condition and having it restored will not take away from its value.
After doing some research, I found this ad on the internet, it is an ad from 1903. Because the ad is so old, it is not very clear, but this is what it says:
Oriole Go-Basket
Can Be Wheeled or Carried
A boon to Mother – a delight to Baby. Takes the place of Carriage, Go-Cart, jumper and High Chair. May be changed from one to the other in three seconds without removing Baby. Has rubber tired wheels, weighs only seven pounds, simple and perfect in construction. Easier to wheel, costs much less than Go-Cart of same quality, takes less room, is more stylish. Easier to carry Baby in Oriole Go-Basket than in arms. Can be held in lap without soiling clothes. With it Mama and Baby go visiting, travelling, shopping, on street cars, elevators, anywhere – both are comfortable, and their clothes are always neat and clean. When carried the wheels are invisible. Used either way Baby is always perfectly secure. Scientifically correct. Endorsed by leading physicians.
Booklet Free – Tells how to acquire an Oriole Go-Basket C.O.D. with privilege of examination.
